The Divine Story of Gopal Bhaiya Ji
Over 70 years ago, Srimati Shanti Bala Devi from Samastipur, Bihar, was gifted a Laddu Gopal deity by her Guru Shri 1008 Ramanujacharya Ji Maharaj, a Vaishnav saint of Shri Sampraday, and was instructed to raise Him as her son after the tragic loss of her newborn.
She cared for him as a real child—feeding, singing lullabies, and taking Him wherever she went. The whole family accepted Him as their eldest brother and began calling Him Gopal Bhaiya.
Later, on Vivah Panchami, Gopal Bhaiya Ji was ceremonially married to Rukmini Ji (Radha Rani), and the temple was formally established in 1981 under the guidance of Shri Krishna Bhavna Bhavitam Trust.
Temple History
The divine journey of Radha Krishna Gopal Bhaiya Temple is not merely the story of a place — it is the living embodiment of Vatsalya Bhakti, divine motherhood, and personal surrender to the Lord. It began over 70 years ago with a heartbroken mother, Srimati Shanti Bala Devi, hailing from Chatauna village in Samastipur, Bihar. Having lost her newborn son shortly after birth, her soul was immersed in grief. During this period, her spiritual master, Shri 1008 Ramanujacharya Ji Maharaj, a revered celibate saint of Shri Sampraday, visited her home.
Seeing her sorrow and spiritual yearning, the Guru Maharaj, in a profound act of grace, placed a deity of Laddu Gopal Ji in her aanchal (lap) and instructed her to raise Him with full maternal love as her own child. That one act transformed her life completely. She began worshiping and nurturing Gopal Ji not as an idol, but as a living son. She bathed Him, fed Him, sang lullabies, carried Him with her everywhere, and poured every ounce of her motherhood into His service.
As the years passed, Gopal Ji came to be known not just as a deity but as the eldest son of the family, affectionately called Gopal Bhaiya. Her other children — two daughters and three sons — grew up treating Gopal Bhaiya Ji with the same respect and love as an elder sibling. The divine relationship deepened with time, and devotees began to witness unusual grace and spiritual fulfillment through darshan and seva.
One day, Guru Maharaj instructed that Gopal Bhaiya Ji must be married as per divine tradition. On the auspicious occasion of Vivah Panchami, Gopal Bhaiya Ji was ceremonially married to Rukmini Ji, representing Radha Rani. The Kanyadaan was performed by another Vaishnav disciple. Gopal Bhaiya Ji then expressed His desire to have an independent residence — a temple of His own. Thus, with collective family devotion and Guru Maharaj’s blessing, the Radha Krishna Gopal Bhaiya Temple was established in 1981, within the premises of Daulatpur, Pandeypur, Varanasi.
This temple, since then, has not only been the seat of daily rituals and spiritual upliftment, but also a beacon of service. The temple has organized:
